PainterlyBread for the Knight Who Failed to Kill Me
Twenty years after Ashvelk the Emberdrake burned the mountain village of Hearthfen to the ground, he returns as a plain man named Ash and opens a bakery on the ashes. He has learned exactly one thing: how to make something warm without destroying it. Then his first real customer walks in — a gaunt, half-blind knight in dented plate, the girl squire who drove a lance into his chest on the night of the fire and failed to finish him. She doesn't recognize him. She orders bread. She rents the room upstairs, and the two of them spend a burning, tender season deciding whether a debt that large can be paid in loaves — while a young glory-hunting dragonslayer from the Order of the Fifth Lance circles the village looking for a monster to kill and a hero to humiliate.
