Synopsis

Sister-Translator Aune Veldemar is a Veiled Penitent: if she repeats a sealed confession, a living veil will bind her mouth forever and take her tongue. She survives by words anyway, serving as the empire's chief cipher-translator in a war against the southern principality of Tarsen. When hostage prince Edran enters her confessional and whispers enemy battle plans in a dialect only she can read, he turns her vow into the safest spy route in the capital. Aune cannot speak, cannot refuse him, cannot leave the Order, and cannot ignore that her brother's regiment may live or die by the secrets trapped behind her teeth. Each confession becomes a locked-room duel of faith, desire, and treason as Aune finds loopholes in silence and Edran falls for the woman he is using. The pilot ends when a cipher key exposes Aune's own mother as Tarsen's dead spymistress, turning Aune from imperial asset into possible traitor just as wedding bells announce Edran's political marriage to the imperial dauphine.
