“Chapter One (Aurelia) Growing up the daughter of a single mother wasn’t as easy as most people might think. I never knew my father; he abandoned us just one week after I was born. As I matured, I realized how much closer I was to my grandparents than to the woman who supposedly raised me. My grandparents taught me everything they knew and expected nothing short of excellence. My name is Aurelia Honeyvale—daughter of Sienna Honeyvale, and granddaughter of Rosa and Leonardo Honeyvale. Instead of looking after me, my mother spent her time cycling through a revolving door of random men, most of those relationships ending in dramatic breakups and floods of tears. I was well aware that after my father died, she was desperately craving the kind of affection she had lost. That was the excuse for her endless dates, anyway. Meanwhile, I stayed busy despising men entirely—aside from the ones in my own family, of course. As I grew older, looking in the mirror became a bittersweet experience. I watched myself morph into a physical copy of my mother: the same olive skin, the same dark wavy hair, the same hazel-brown eyes, and the same soft, natural features. More than anything, I wished people would look past my reflection and see me. Years later, my mother finally settled down, marrying her self-proclaimed soulmate, Antonio Rossi. Born into wealth, Antonio seemed charming at first. But the moment my mother left the room, his charming mask slipped, revealing a ruthless, malicious streak. One year into their marriage, they had two sons. Naturally, because I was the eldest, the burden of parenthood fell squarely on my shoulders. I was expected to babysit my younger brothers and raise them while my mother drifted through life. Whenever my grandparents, aunts, or uncles offered to help, Antonio intervened, systematically forcing me to cut ties with them. My mother simply nodded along to his demands, entirely spineless. Was Antonio actually nice to her behind closed doors, or had he completely reeled her in? I got my answer on a Tuesday afternoon. Returning home from school after a brutal, draining exam, I froze in the hallway. Muffled voices drifted from the kitchen—a heavy, furious Sicilian dialect of Italian bleeding seamlessly into English. I crept closer, pressing my back against the wall. "Te lo dico io, Sienna, when are we going to get rid of that brat?" Antonio demanded, his voice thick with agitation. "She turns 18 in a few days, doesn't she?" "Non conosco, Antonio," my mother replied coldly. "She is like a leech. I’m only keeping her around because of her late father’s will. Once she turns 18, I'll frame her as unstable and take the entire inheritance for myself." "So che, Sienna, but we have to get rid of her," Antonio pressed. "And speaking of which, I've thought of the best plan yet. A friend of mine showed me a flyer for a school thousands of miles away, isolated on an island. Havenfall Academy. The most elite of the elite. Since it's a boarding school, it's the perfect way to ship off that useless brat. Besides, Luca and Emilio are 14 now; they can take care of themselves." My stomach plummeted, a wave of sickening heat rising in my throat. I had always known my mother was negligent, but this crossed a line I never thought possible. My knuckles turned white as I clenched my fists. I pushed open the front door, slipping inside unnoticed, and marched straight to my room. Slamming the door shut, I buried my face in my hands, hot tears burning my skin. My mother had failed me at every turn, but now she was actively plotting to destroy me—and she was ready to abandon her other sons just to appease Antonio. She wasn't a mother anymore. She was a stranger.”
