डर का अंत

Ch. 1 · The Weight of a Proposal

Opening page. Bright midday on the college quad: the central fountain, the main academic hall behind it, benches along the paved walkways. Aakash stands alone at the right edge of the frame, hands in his pockets, looking across at the fount
  1. Caption: College campus — 12:40 PM
  2. Narration: This is Aakash. Twenty years old, second-year student. He can solve any equation on the board and not one sentence in front of a girl he likes.
The friends arrive. They jog up the walkway from the left and close in around Aakash, already talking over each other.
  1. Friends: Aakash! There you are. We've been looking everywhere.
  2. Friends: Don't tell me you're backing out again.
The friends turn up the pressure. One claps Aakash on the shoulder; Aakash tries to hold his ground.
  1. Tallest friend: Today. You promised us today.
  2. Aakash: I said I'd think about it.
Aakash admits he wrote his confession down. The folded paper comes out of his pocket and the friends react.
  1. Aakash: I wrote it down. So I wouldn't forget.
  2. Friends: You wrote it down?!
The friends make their case for Priya while Aakash's confidence thins out.
  1. Tallest friend: Priya. Third year. Top of her class. Sharp as a blade.
  2. Aakash: She's never once looked at me.
Aakash voices his fear. The friends stop joking and answer him straight.
  1. Aakash: What if she says no?
  2. Friends: Then you'll know. That's better than guessing for another year.
A friend spots Priya across the quad. Aakash turns and sees her for the first time today.
  1. Tallest friend: There. By the fountain. That's her.
The friends step back to watch from the bench. Aakash agrees to go.
  1. Friends: We'll wait right here. Go.
  2. Aakash: Okay.
Aakash leaves his friends behind and starts across the quad toward the fountain.
  1. Narration: Four steps in, his mouth was already dry.
Aakash crosses the quad alone, rehearsing his first line under his breath.
  1. Aakash: Priya, there's something I've wanted to say.
Aakash keeps rehearsing, checks his written lines, and looks up again.
  1. Aakash: For a long time. Since the first week of class.
  2. Narration: Every version sounded wrong the moment it left his mouth.
Aakash sees Priya ahead on the walkway and stops dead.
  1. Narration: She was twenty steps away. His throat closed like a fist.
Aakash puts the written speech away and steadies himself for the last stretch.
  1. Narration: Ten more steps and there would be no taking it back.
Aakash reaches the walkway where Priya is standing with her classmates. She has not noticed him yet.
  1. Narration: Priya's classmates were laughing at something. She wasn't.
Priya's classmates notice Aakash first; Priya turns her head.
  1. Narration: They had never spoken. Not once in three years.
Aakash freezes. His hand goes to the pocket where the paper is.
  1. Narration: His feet had stopped without asking him.
A few students notice the scene forming. Aakash forces one step forward and looks at Priya.
  1. Narration: He had planned to do this somewhere quiet.
A held beat on Priya, waiting without impatience or interest.
Aakash tries to speak and nothing comes out.
  1. Narration: The paper had twelve lines on it. His mind had none.
Aakash falls back on his written lines and pulls the paper out again.
  1. Aakash: Priya, I—
Priya answers Aakash's false start with one flat word.
  1. Priya: Yes?
Aakash catches sight of his friends in the distance, closes his eyes, and lets the paper drop to his side.
  1. Narration: A year of walking the long way past her classroom, and it came down to this.
  2. Aakash (thinking): Say it.
Aakash lifts his head and looks at Priya properly for the first time.
  1. Narration: He had never once got this far before.
Final page. Aakash takes his breath and opens his mouth; the first word of his confession hangs in the air, unspoken.
  1. Narration: Whatever he said next would decide everything after it.
