The Courier's Smile

In the fog-drowned city of Ashfen, Kenzie and Rilla find the corpse of the eighth recipient — a boy with the same ring, drained grey and empty, his yellow letter still in his pocket. Kenzie reads the courier's handwriting and recognizes it. On a bell tower across the water, a navy-blue figure raises one gloved hand and waves to him, friendly, patient, unhurried.
