Nine Were Sent

Kenzie is found — and nearly robbed — by Rilla, a half-blood scavenger who has learned to check fresh corpses before the fog does. She teaches him the basics of Ashfen: the Yellow Letter summons from other worlds, the couriers collect the rings of the dead, and most recipients die in their first hour. Kenzie has already outlived eight of them, and Rilla wants to know why.
